They had the space, but weren’t sure what to do with it.

A homeowner had a large backyard that their family rarely used. They wondered whether they could turn part of it into a separate space for an ageing parent or visiting family, but had no idea where to start.

What they were trying to work out

Could a secondary dwelling fit in the backyard? Would there be enough space and access? And would the project make sense for their family?

How A Home to Love helped

We looked at the property from the homeowner’s perspective — what they already had, how they used their home and what they wanted the property to do for their family. We then helped them understand the key considerations around layout, access, planning, services and potential costs.

Where they ended up

The homeowner decided to investigate a secondary dwelling further. They now had a clearer idea of where it could potentially go, what needed to be checked and which professionals to speak with before making a decision.

The takeaway

They didn’t need to know the answer before they started. They simply needed someone to help them understand what their property could potentially do.
